Moderation and Motivation

Recently, I uploaded a before and after photo from my weight loss adventure and it has stirred a few questions from friends and followers. I have always hated using the word diet because society has prescribed a definition to it, which is not eating. I hate it. I hate it when people think that I am on a diet, that I am not eating to lose weight. I have tried to avoid its use for a long time. There was even a time I said I didn’t believe in diets = not eating. It is true to this day. I still don’t believe in the ‘not eating’ notion but I have learned the right impression of the word, which is simply the sum of food a person consumes.

In five months, I managed to lose 10lbs. From unhappily finding out that I had reached 125lbs, I decided to happily bounce back down to my average. But I wasn’t going to cut eating from my life. After researching on my own, I found a plan that works for me – a weight loss plan that only consists of eating, a few restrictions and NO EXERCISE. The reason I do not exercise is because I can’t. I have mild mitral valve prolapse, which is a heart condition. A valve in my left ventricle does not close properly, disabling blood to flow properly. Strenuous activities make it hard for me to breathe, keeping my blood from circulating properly. If you are in good health, I suggest you exercise while you eat your love handles away. It will make the process faster and will give you a stunning body.

I know 10 lbs. is not a lot. I know many people who have lost over 40 lbs, even 60. But I do want to share my experience because it may help others who are also unable to exercise and/or are lazy bottoms who just don’t want to. I also know a few. Not judging you.

WHAT AND WHAT NOT

I love how people ask me what I eat instead of what I don’t eat.  I really want the word diet to become separated from the notion of starving one’s self out. With 10 lbs. lost, I may have helped redefine it. What do I eat? I eat a lot of things. Let me give you a list.

Smoothies I started out by drinking smoothies. I would have smoothies for breakfast and sometimes for lunch, too. You can put anything in it – anything fruit and vegetable, that is. I also put ground flax seed or flax meal because it’s healthy, and it aids in weight loss. Avoid: cow’s milk (use almond, soy, rice milk instead), ice cream (use low fat yogurt), sugar,

Quinoa /keen-wah/ Quinoa is great. It’s like slimming rice. Some people don’t like how it tastes, but honestly, you get used to it. It is very filling. I love it because it’s not grain. It’s more of a seed, or a vegetable. It’s not carb. This can be hard to find. You can also use brown rice (I don't) or NO rice at all. That works too. Rice makes you fat.

Salad is always great. It is easy to make, it can be filling and it's fun. Toss in your greens, vegetables, fruits, whisk in a few drops of olive oil, balsamic vinegar and honey, and you are set. Don't buy salad from McDonald's or Wendy's then call yourself a healthy eater. Those have 400-500 calories despite how healthy they look. Creamy dressings are a no no in my book. Homemade dressings are a big YES.

Sky Flakes If you are Filipino, you know this. Damn you if you don't. I eat it all the time. I also like eating it with  Century tuna (squeeze a bit of kalamansi and you are set). Sky Flakes is my go-to and to-go food. I love it. Cheap, easy, and good.

Fruits I eat a lot of fruit. The ones in smoothies and salads not included. I have it as snack or dessert.

Chicken breast Season with salt, pepper, lemon, paprika, garlic powder, a bit of olive oil. Pop it in the oven and you are done. I am talking about skinless chicken breast, okay? I know how sinfully good the skin is, but try to opt for skinless. Oil free is good.

I EAT SO MANY OTHER THINGS. I don't limit myself to the ones I have mentioned. These are simply staples in my diet.

YES I eat chocolates, ice cream, candy, fat, white rice, eggs, bread, pasta, bacon, potatoes, and I drink milkshakes and pop. NO I do not have them every night - I USED TO - that is why I gained the extra 10lbs. in the first place.

See, it is all about moderation and motivation. I know you might say that eating healthy is boring. It can be boring, I admit. So what I do is, I eat healthy during the day on Mondays - Fridays. I eat whatever is for dinner. From Friday night to Sunday night, I eat WHATEVER I want. Then I go back to my routine on Mondays.

I say it's a win-win deal.

Eat responsibly!
